This PhD project is titled Facing Lived Operational Obstacles: Exploring the Bi-Directional Impact of Menstruation on Women in the UK Armed Forces (FLOOD-UKAF), and is being undertaken by Ruth Guest.
FLOOD-UKAF explores what it is like to menstruate while serving in the UK Armed Forces .It examines how periods can affect military life, how the demands of service can affect menstruation, and what could better support serving personnel.
This multi-method doctoral research combines a review of existing military evidence with a large UK Armed Forces questionnaire (The Period Report) and follow-on qualitative research. More than 1,000 personnel participated in The Period Report. The project explores menstrual symptoms and management alongside the physical, psychological, practical and occupational realities of menstruating in military environments, helping address an important gap in UK evidence.
